Best Picture Oscar Goes to ... No Country! (Sunday, February 24, 2008 11:01:00 PM)

Hot off the presses I guess.  No Country for Old Men took the Oscar for Best Picture, a much deserved award in my opinion.

The No Country crew accepts their Academy Award

I saw both There Will Be Blood and No Country, and don't get me wrong, they were both fantastic movies, but I was glad to see No Country win it.  I still remember walking out of No Country in November thinking "Wow, that was a great movie, but I wonder if it would be worthy of an Oscar?  They don't tend to pick shoot 'em up movies for Oscars."

But they did!  And I'm glad. I think there can be movies with lots of gunshots that still have great artistic value, and No Country for Old Men proved that.

Another thing about There Will Be Blood though ... did anyone notice that the music was extremely tense at all times?  It was like most of the suspense of the movie was created by the overly tense music.  It's like "Holy shit! Something's about to go down!  They're putting a bunch of stakes in the ground on the way to the coast and this music says something bad is about to happen!"  ... then nothing does.  Good movie, but they cheated with the music a lot.

Daniel Day-Lewis?  Feh ... He's good, but he definitely "chewed the scenery and then drank a milkshake" as my brother so aptly put it.  Here's a screenshot of him accepting the award.

Day-Lewis accepting the Oscar.  Who's that peculiarly do-able
60-something on the right?  Helen Mirren.  Mmm ... if I was
90 I'd definitely throw it in her.

Never realized he was so Britsh and far less manly than he appears in Gangs of New York and this movie (double earings and long hair ... a faggy British accent, too).  Anyways, that's all for this post.  Just wanted to get the Oscar info out there to all those with the burning question of who won Best Picture.

Since I've been sort of nomadic lately, now you can look at this little widget dealie and see where I'm at and what the weather is there. Nifty, eh?
