Finally? 64-bit Flash Plugin for Linux Firefox Shows Promise (Sunday, March 08, 2009 6:27:00 PM)

So I've been on Fedora a lot this week and, as usual, I was cleaning up the cobwebs with random applications that have broken in the 2 weeks since I haven't used the OS (gotta love Linux).  Among the broken applications was the oft-buggy Flash plugin for Firefox on x86_64 systems.

I'm figuring "Ugh, time to uninstall the plugin, goof around with nswrapper, and hopefully I can get it back to it's normal choppy self."

But, to my surprise, Adobe finally pulled its head out of its ass sometime during the last several years that x86_64 Linux systems have existed, and just a few weeks ago released an alpha of a 64-bit Flash plugin for Linux!

Look at that! Adobe Labs?  Almost like they're developing for more than just IE now ...

Installation was easy as usual (just copy the .so file into your /home/username/.mozilla folder), but to be honest, I was still expecting some heavy bugs since it was an alpha version.  However, I was pleased to see that Flash videos were now running pretty smoothly.  No more of the persistent choppiness that was commonplace in the Linux Flash plugins of old.

The one major bug I did notice is that it doesn't handle more than one Flash video on a page very well (think: your video + annoying Flash advertisement in the sidebar).  I don't think this was Compiz or my system itself slowing me down ... pretty sure it was the plugin.  But, who the hell knows with Linux sometimes.   Either way, I'm glad they're making some effort.  Maybe in my lifetime I'll be lucky enough to see a Beta ...

Where am I at Right Now?

Since I've been sort of nomadic lately, now you can look at this little widget dealie and see where I'm at and what the weather is there. Nifty, eh?
