Windows Updates and the Background Intelligent Transfer Service (Thursday, January 15, 2009 12:10:00 PM)

In continuing my trend of "tech fix posts", I thought I'd share this
little problem I had with Windows Updates lately. I had been reading
about
this worm reeking havoc on Windows computers lately and I thought "crap, when was the last time mine was updated?"
Luckily, it turns out my computer
had been
updated since October, so the worm wouldn't affect me, but I knew I'd
been having a problem with updates recently. When I went to Windows
Update in Start>Programs, it would say something along the lines of
"Windows Update could not start because one or more of the following
services are not running: Event Log, Background Intelligent Transfer
Service (BITS), Automatic Updates".
I kept looking at the BITS service and seeing that it was Started though ... I'm thinking "wtf? what else could it be?"
As
it turns out, in the Log On tab, the service was set to log on as a
"local system account". I changed it to my account (which is a local
and domain administrator) and BAM, instantly the Windows Updates
started working again.
I suspect this all had something to do
with recently joining the workstation to a domain, but what exactly
caused it I still don't know. So, for now, the fix is: "Change the
Log On account to something with administrative privileges on this
computer" ... in my case, it was my account.
